For twenty years, my husband Richard repeated the same explanation: the woman tattooed over his heart wasn’t real, just a drawing he’d done in his youth. I believed him. I trusted him through five failed fertility treatments, every difficult doctor’s appointment, and on the day we finally brought our adopted daughter, Claire, home. I never imagined that a photograph hidden in the garage would completely change my understanding of our family history.
The discovery that changed everything
It all started when an old photograph fell from a hidden compartment inside Richard’s toolbox. The picture showed a young woman holding a premature baby in a neonatal unit. Her eyes and the small rose behind her left ear were identical to those in the tattoo Richard had on his chest.
Turning the photo over, I found six words written by my husband: “Forgive me, Rose. She can’t know.”
Beneath a tray of screws, an old address book was also found, with almost all the numbers crossed out. Only one remained untouched: Rose’s.
