After ten years of losses, we welcomed our miracle baby, but when my husband saw the birthmark on her shoulder, he turned pale and whispered, “No… That’s impossible.”

The nurse laughed softly.

“Birthmark. Completely harmless.”

“Which side?” I asked.

“Left,” Caleb replied.

She smiled

“She already has more distinctive features than I do.”

“That’s not difficult.”

For the first time, everything felt normal.

Our daughter was alive.

Healthy

And my husband was telling terrible jokes.

They took her down the corridor so she could finish examining her when she was a newborn.

I closed my eyes.

What seemed like ten seconds turned out to be fifteen minutes.

When I opened them, another nurse came in carrying a baby wrapped in a blanket.

“There she is.”

Caleb stood up immediately

“Do you want to hold your daughter?”

“Yes,” she said softly. “I do.”

The nurse placed the baby in her arms.

The blanket slipped slightly as Caleb adjusted it.

Her smile disappeared

His entire body froze.

¿Caleb?

Nothing

He stared at the baby’s shoulder.

The nurse frowned

“Sir? Are you feeling dizzy?”

“No.”

Something in her voice made my stomach clench.

She lowered the blanket a little more.

A reddish spot could be seen on the baby’s right shoulder.

“The mark,” he whispered.

So what about that?

He looked at me.

“This is not our baby.”

The nurse’s expression changed.

Excuse me?

“Our daughter’s birthmark was dark and on her left side.”

He tried to explain that a newborn’s skin can change after birth.

Caleb shook his head.

“No. I just stared at him. The first nurse saw it too.”
